AMIA President's Awards, 2003.

Dr. Tang is recognized for his many contributions over the years to the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) and related activities. Specifically, Paul has served as a member of the current AMIA Executive Committee; as a member of the AMIA Board; as the chair of the Public Policy Committee; as chair of the Joint Healthcare Information Technology Alliance (JHITA), representing AMIA; as cochair of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Patient Safety Data Standards Committee; and, he has worked on functional standards for the Electronic Health Record (EHR). The award is also given for his early roles in the Computer-based Patient Record Institute (CPRI), including serving as Chair; and, for his vision and forward thinking that have contributed to the goals and mission of AMIA. Dr. Ackerman is acknowledged for his contributions to AMIA and its predecessor organizations. Michael served as Treasurer of both the Symposium on Computer Applications in Medical Care (SCAMC) for many years and the American Association of Medical Systems and Informatics (AAMSI). In addition, the award is given for his leadership and vision in The National Library of Medicine's Visible Human Project; his leadership in the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering's Council of Organizations, representing AMIA; for his service on the AMIA Board; and for his general leadership and teaching in the field of medical informatics. Dr. Goltra is selected for his longtime support of AMIA and its predecessors. Peter and his company have exhibited at AMIA since its beginning. They have also been corporate members since that category was established. Peter has been supportive of the organization in many ways, including financial support. We would also like to recognize his contributions to the field in Medicomp's sharing the MEDCIN vocabulary with the informatics community. Dr. Zapp is honored for his outstanding leadership in AMIA's Primary Care Informatics Working Group and for his leadership in spearheading the effort to get the National Alliance for Primary Care Informatics (NAPCI) organization organized. Dr. Bates is chosen for his leadership in AMIA, in NAPCI, and in the IOM Patient Safety Data Standards Committee. David has become renowned for his contributions and work in the area of patient safety. Connecting for Health is a private/public collaborative supported by the Markle Foundation and the eHealth Initiative. Connecting for Health provided critical and timely leadership for a short period in which they raised national awareness about the need for data standards …
